Located under an hour north of British Columbia’s capital of Victoria, the small city of Duncan is the hub of the Island’s Cowichan Valley region. With an official city population of under 5,000, it is one of the smallest regions on the island, yet is home to a number of shops and restaurants to enjoy, as well as the world’s largest collection of outdoor totem poles.

Located on traditional First Nations lands, Duncan’s history alone is a reason to navigate to the area. Incorporated in 1912 as a city, Duncan and the surrounding area’s ups and downs can be further explored through a visit to the Cowichan Valley Museum. Dubbed “The City of Totems”, Duncan features over 40 carved totems that can be viewed on a self-guided tour through the city. Each totem’s story enriches the area’s unique history and is an essential viewing for first-time visitors to the city.

A trip to Duncan would not be complete without a Mini Excursion along the area’s back roads. Places to explore include Genoa and Maple Bay—the latter which is home to a number of additional shops, restaurants and Marinas, as well as a vibrant history in itself. The scenic views along the roads in the valley contain gorgeous views of surrounding farmland, as well as ocean views, depending on your chosen route of travel.

While Duncan is the epicentre of entertainment in the Cowichan Valley, it is by no means the only location to visit on your trip. Located just outside of Duncan is the small community of Cobble Hill, home to several hiking trails and paths—another option for outdoor enthusiasts or for those who would just like to stretch their legs. A slight excursion inland will also lead to Lake Cowichan, one of Vancouver Island’s largest and most popular lakes. Many Vancouver Island residents call Lake Cowichan home, and there are a number of campsites and parks which visitors can book, should they want to experience a night or two on the lake. Perhaps you’re feeling like a glass of wine? The Cowichan Valley is home to multiple vineyards, perfect for an afternoon wine-tasting tour with friends or family (or both).

If a customer is a no show after 30 minutes without at least a telecom or text, their party agrees to forfeit the deposit and will receive a refund on the remainder of their payment following that. If, for reasons beyond our control, Journada Excursions are unable to meet the scheduled time within 30 minutes, we will reschedule or refund 100-percent of what has been paid.

Journada Excursions reserves the right to refuse service to anyone at any time. No open alcohol beverages in are allowed in company vehicles. No illegal substances of any kind will be tolerated during company tours.
